The Machine gun is most effective against Riflemen or Warriors (weaker troops). It is more accurate the closer the troops wander towards the Machine Gun. Machine guns are effective in the front line of defense on your base, it stops weak troops from making it into your base. Place your Machine Guns near Boom Cannons, it can prevent larger number of troops from destroying it.
